Transitions between three thematical segments of student works in Pula - old city center, fortifications and secluded military zones - shaped our conception of the exhibition as each part of the pavilion symbolizes one of the themes. The half cylindrical shape was derived from the circular floorplans of the Austro-Hungarian fortification systems, while the separated flat plane represents the seclusion and vast open spaces of the city’s military zones.
On the other hand, the two vertical planes were derived from the old city center’s narrow streets and corridors between buildings. The materiality of the pavilion is an experimental coating mass - a mix of plaster and steel dust from an industrial warehouse, which started to rust after a couple of days and gave the desired effect, thus reflecting the city’s industrial heritage and at the time actualities surrounding the closure of its shipyard.
